SUNRISE

On a recent trip to Europe, I discovered a wondrous thing. The sun rises there much as it does in the States. And I thought about how it must also rise in Iraq and Iran, in China and Africa.   It must surely rise on Muslims and Jews, Christians and Buddhists, as well as those that profess no belief.

It must also rise
On murderers and saints,
Beggars, the wealthy,
Liberals and conservatives,
Dogs and cats,
Rats and hyenas;
Even the person
I can't stand;
All in much the same way.

May I give compassion
As the sun
Gives its light;
Indiscriminately,
Unconditionally.

Tall order,
But it surely seems
Right.
